12 Fun Activities for Your First Summer as a Married Couple

Your first summer as a married couple is a great opportunity to try new things, make memories and start traditions together, all while showing off that brand-new wedding bling. This is an exciting time for you and your spouse, and we want to help you make the most of it! Keep reading to see some of our favorite ways to spend the summer.

1. Host a cookout or bonfire What says summertime better than hosting an outdoor bash for your friends? This is a perfect way to catch up with people you haven’t seen since your wedding or to see anyone who was unable to attend on the big day. It’s also a chance for you and your S.O. to show off your new space if you moved in together after getting hitched—and all the gifts you received from your wedding registry.

2. Travel somewhere new You don’t have to go to a far-off destination to make it a worthwhile trip (although the idea of a second honeymoon does sound pretty nice). A weekend getaway exploring a new place, even if it’s just one town over, is a great bonding activity that will keep your newlywed glow alive. If you and your spouse are from different hometowns, take turns showing each other where you grew up. You might learn something totally new about your spouse!

3. Fix up your home Whether you and your spouse lived together before getting married or just moved into your own place, it’s nice to spend some time sprucing up your home, especially if you’re combining your belongings. Get rid of clutter and unwanted items, organize your closets, and tackle those weeds in the garden. Not only will it feel great coming home to a fresh space, but you’ll have a ton of extra room for all of those gifts from your wedding registry.

4. Go to a wine or beer tasting We especially love this idea if you were married at a winery or brewery. Take a trip down memory lane and revisit the place where you said “I do.” It’s a sweet way to reminisce on how far the two of you have come together.

5. Find a great sunset spot Scout out a spot around town where you and your S.O. can watch the sunset together. Start a new tradition and vow to visit the spot on anniversaries or whenever one of you is having a bad day. In a few years, it will be fun to come back and reflect on your first summer as a married couple.

6. Recreate your first date This might be tricky to replicate 100%, but we think that only adds to the fun of it! If you met in college, visit your alma mater and some of your favorite spots around campus. Maybe your first date was at an ice skating rink in the middle of winter, and now you and your spouse have to give rollerblading a try. Or perhaps the two of you bonded over Mexican food at a restaurant in a different city, so try to find one just like it in your neighborhood. Whatever you do, get creative with it!

7. Have a viewing party for your wedding photos or video Chances are, you’ve looked through your wedding photos and have watched your wedding video a million times since they were shared with you, but your friends and family may not have had the chance. Use this as an opportunity to get everyone together for a night of wedding photo scrapbooking, or host a viewing party complete with drinks and snacks. Take it to the next level and rent a projector for an outdoor showing (weather permitting) beneath the stars.

8. Treat yourselves One of our favorite things about summertime is the sweet treats (if you can resist a smoothie or iced coffee on a hot day, you are stronger than us). Find a snowball stand, ice cream shop or bakery that the two of you can go to on a regular basis. It’s the perfect way to squeeze in time with your S.O. if life starts to feel too busy.

9. Go on a picnic Pack a basket with your favorite items and spend the day dining al fresco. Whether you drive to a remote location or simply walk to the neighborhood park down the block, there’s no denying that good food and sunshine is a winning combo.

10. Visit an amusement park Make it a date with just your spouse, or invite a few friends along for a group outing. Splurge on one of those silly roller coaster photos — the funnier, the better! It’s bound to be a fun-filled day that will get your adrenaline going.

11. Adopt a pet Stop by your local animal shelter to adopt a furry friend who is in need of a family. If you aren’t ready for the responsibility of having a pet, consider volunteering, sponsoring an animal, or asking if the shelter has an “adopt for a day” program. Use your Instagram and Facebook skills to raise awareness about eligible animals and help get them adopted. Not only will the animals thank you, but doing a good deed like this will bring you closer as a couple.

12. Take a class together Choose something that you both want to learn about (cooking, art, yoga, etc.) and sign up for a class or workshop. This is the perfect chance to develop a new skill while bonding with your husband or wife. If you’re a more active couple, consider joining a sports league and letting loose with your competitive sides!
